Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2022-578

Non-dug “56-56” cartridge for Civil War-era Spencer carbine or rifle of .52 caliber. No headstamp. Great condition.

At least five companies made these cartridges.  These were completely self-contained rimfire cartridges: bullet, powder, case, and primer in one piece.  Made under Smith and Wesson’s patent (#27,933 dated April 17, 1860), the cases went through at least eight steps in the forming process.  Fulminate was then “spun” into the recesses of the rim, the powder charge was inserted, and a bullet was crimped in place.  [jet] [ph:L]
