NICE COLT THIRD MODEL NAVY MADE IN 1856

$3,750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1142-124

This .36 caliber Colt Navy has the smaller, round triggerguard of the Third Model and is serial numbered 49055, giving it an 1856 date of manufacture. The barrel assembly shows thin blue. The frame shows visible case colors. And, the brass shows significant traces of the original silver finish.

The metal is smooth overall. The barrel address is sharp and crisp: “ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY.” There are a few light dings and short diagonal scratches, and just a small patch of salt and peppering on the very right edge of the address, just forward of the forcing cone. The barrel edges show a light gray but are sharp and flats and the sides of the barrel assembly show thin blue, as does the loading assembly. The cylinder has a partially visible naval battle scene and good Colt patent and serial number stamps, matching the other numbers, and shows a bit brighter from wear. The frame shows not only a strong “COLT’S/PATENT” stamp, but visible case colors. The grips are the correct civilian varnished one-piece grips, showing a good fit and color, though with some scratches on the mid and upper right side. The brass shows significant remnants of its original, now tarnished, silver wash, a strong indicator of the overall condition of the gun since it is usually the first thing to go in handling.

The six-shot .36 caliber Colt Navy was immensely popular among travelers, westerners, gold miners, and military men, remaining in production from 1850 to 1873. This is a very nice, early example.   [sr] [ph:L]
