Original Third Model version of the popular 1851 Colt Navy Revolver in very nice overall condition.
Manufactured sometime in mid-1857, this M51 Navy bears matching serial number #72996 marked on all its components including the wedge. Weapon has a six-shot cylinder and features an octagon 7½” long barrel with attached working loading lever. Barrel is bright with light mottling and hints of the original blued finish near the muzzle. The maker’s address is strong and reads “ADDRESS SAM’L COLT NEW YORK CITY.” Bore has good rifling and light surface dirt. Frame has small amounts of original finish. Cylinder looks to have been cleaned and has no scene left. Left side of the frame has a good “COLT’S PATENT” over “U.S.” stamping.
Cylinder indexes properly. Half cock safety works well and the cylinder spins free as it should. The hammer holds at the full cock position, however the cylinder will still spin freely and does not hold steady as it should. All six of the original nipples are strong, not chipped or broken. Frame screws are good, only one shows some buggering. The original walnut grips are in good condition but have been refinished. No silver wash remains on the trigger guard or underside of the grip frame. [ad] [ph:L]
