CONFEDERATE USED MODEL 1842 AUSTRIAN SMOOTHBORE MUSKET

$3,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-4206

Total length of the weapon is 48½” long with a barrel length of 33½” long. Caliber is approx. .72.

Stock is of brown beech, is dry and shows heavy wear from use, age and storage. There are several chips in the edge of the ramrod channel and several small splits near the buttplate tang. There is also a heavily “burned out” section behind the nipple, a small chip behind the barrel tang and another just forward of the lock.

The left side of the butt does not have the raised cheek rest as found on later models. Also, this side of the butt bears a carved 2.00 x 2.00 inch five-pointed star. Attached to the right side of the butt is a 4.00 inch x 2.00 inch clipped corner paper label with a period ink inscription that reads “USED BY CONFEDERATE TROOPS IN 1861 USA.”

All gun metal is in the black and untouched. Iron lockplate surface bears the date “853” with a barely discernable small crown behind the hammer. Lockplate is beveled and rounded at tail and front. Action works but it is loose and sloppy. Bore is smooth, dark and dirty.

Barrel is secured to stock with three iron bands and three band springs. All bands are flat at bottom. Front band is double and fits around the front sight. Barrel has a very crude split rear sight. Bayonet lug is present under muzzle as is the clip of the Laukart system for fastening the bayonet.

Ramrod is iron buttonhead with hole at center.

Sling swivels are mounted on the second barrel band and to a stud screwed into the stock just behind the triggerguard. Both keepers are missing.

This weapon has the appearance of heavy use which one would expect from a Confederate weapon in use from 1861.  [ad]
