Item Code: 218-568

This Civil War longarm is a .58 caliber Springfield Model 1863, Type 1, single-shot muzzleloader. The Springfield M1863 Type 1 musket was a government arsenal product from Springfield, Massachusetts. Over two hundred seventy thousand such weapons were produced for the U.S. Ordnance Department during the war years.

Barrel is 40” long with a smooth and bright surface. No pitting to speak of at the breech. Dated 1864 on the top facet of breech, “V / P / [eagle head]” on the next facet, and a small sub-inspector letter stamp on far-left facet just above stock. Bolster with flat side features a nicely detailed spread-winged eagle. Blued two-leaf rear sight is mounted near the breech and combination blade sight and bayonet lug is mounted at the muzzle. Bore is clean and bright with strong rifling.

Case hardened lock and hammer wear a very dark patina.  Lock markings with the “Eagle / U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” in front of the hammer. The distinctive “S” shaped hammer has beveled edges as it should for this model. “1863” date stamped behind the hammer. Mechanical action is strong and crisp.

This type musket was produced without barrel band springs instead using three screw-tightened barrel bands. Butt plate, trigger guard, swivels, and nose cap all perfectly match the smooth, bright appearance of the barrel. Original steel straight-shank ramrod is complete with threaded end.

Black walnut stock is in very good condition with dark original color. Has the usual small dings and dents normal with age and use. Nice oval inspector’s cartouche on left flat.

This is a very nice example of the Model 1863 Springfield type-1 rifle-musket.  [jet]  [ph:L]
