Item Code: 1043-33

The Model 1863 “Zouave” rifle was produced by the firm of Remington in Ilion New York between 1862 and 1865. Weapon is .58 caliber, single shot percussion muzzleloader in good condition. The Remington longarm rated as one of the best made and designed military arms of the Civil War era even though the rifles were never issued to the troops.

This “US” marked weapon measures 49” long with a 33” round barrel secured to a black walnut stock with two-barrel bands. Bore is excellent. Barrel is blued but does show scattered pinprick pitting along its length. A two-leaf rear sight and a blade pinched front sight are present. Bayonet lug is attached to the barrel’s right side to accommodate the Remington saber bayonet. Left side of breech shows strong proof stamp marks of “U.S.” over VP” with eagle head just before the barrel tang. Left facet of the barrel shows strong and clear inspector marks of “R. K. A.” and “STEEL.” Top area of breech exhibits the date “1863” forward of the barrel tang. Tang screw has moderate wear.

The lock plate has darkened throughout and exhibits a light pinprick pitting to match the barrel. Lock has a good spread-winged eagle forward of the hammer with “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.” below and just forward of the eagle. A faint “U.S.” is stamped directly below the eagle. Strong date “1863” behind the hammer. Action works but hammer falls from the half-cock position. Original nipple is present.

All furniture, including butt plate, trigger guard, barrel bands, nose cap, and patch box, are uncleaned brass.

Walnut stock has some light storage scratches and the usual small dings and dents. There is a small chip of wood missing from along the left side of the tang. This is an old chip. There is one strong government cartouche on the flat opposite the lock. Right side of the butt has the brass patch box which opens and closes properly.

Weapon has its original steel ramrod with the tulip head and threaded tip along with both sling swivels. Ramrod surface exhibits some oxidation and scattered light pitting on the tulip end.  [ad] [ph:L]
