TRENTON-CONTRACT .58 CALIBER MODEL 1861 MUSKET DATED 1864

Item Code: 490-2187

Here is an original, 1864-dated Model 1861 .58 caliber “Trenton Contract” percussion rifle-musket in very good condition overall.

The weapon was a product of the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Company, Trenton, New Jersey circa 1863-64. The firm had a contract with the government and it produced some 11,500 muskets for the army during the Civil War.

The barrel is semi-bright with scattered peppery spots of dark oxidation throughout. There is no pitting to speak of. Front sight is present at the top of the muzzle and the rear sight with its blued base and flip-up leaves are also present. Left barrel flat is stamped “N. J” and just above it is a good “VP” with eagle head. Top of the barrel at breech has a strong “1864” date. Bore is clean with very good rifling.

Lock plate is sharply stamped with “U.S.” over “TRENTON” under the bolster with a strong spread-winged eagle beside it under the hammer. A crisp stamped “1864” is present behind the C-shaped hammer. Lock plate surface and hammer match the barrel in appearance. Action is crisp and works properly. Nipple is original.

Black walnut stock is in very nice untouched condition. There are some minor dings and scratches visible but nothing that could be considered severe. Left shoulder by the barrel tang has some minor evidence of old chips. State of New Jersey and inspector’s cartouche are present on the flat opposite the hammer. Just forward of the butt plate the stock is stamped with “R.K.A.” Wood lines along the barrel are excellent and the ramrod channel is also nice.

The trigger guard matches the rest of the metal on the weapon while the butt plate has a nice dark plumb patina and a strong “U.S.” stamped on the tang. The weapon’s original tulip-head, swelled shank, steel ramrod with threaded tip is present. All three barrel bands have strong horizontal “U” stampings. Both sling swivels are present. Screw heads are good and show only minor wear. [ad] [ph:L]
