The barrel has been lightly cleaned leaving behind a bright surface with light peppering along its length and light pitting around the nipple. Rear sight shows some of its blue and has both flip-up leaves. Front iron blade sight is present at muzzle. Left barrel flat is stamped with a very clear “VP” and eagle head. Top of the breech has a strong barrel date of 1864. Bore is very clean with good rifling however there is some scattered pitting.
The lock is semi-bright and matches the barrel in appearance. There is a crisp “1864” stamped behind the hammer. Forward of it is a strong spread-winged eagle over “U.S.” and forward of that is a good “E. ROBINSON” over “NEW YORK.” Action works properly. Nipple is original. Clean out screw is good.
The wood stock is in nice condition with several minor dings and dents and one gouge between the first and second barrel band. No cartouche is visible. All three barrel bands bear the correct horizontal “U” stamp.
Both sling swivels are present. Trigger guard and buttplate match the barrel and lock. Buttplate tang has a strong “US.” Tulip shaped swelled shank ramrod is full length but is missing the threads at bottom. [ad] [ph:L]
