This Federal accoutrement is an original angular socket bayonet made for the US Model 1816 Flintlock Musket longarm. In time, the M1816 was converted to a percussion musket and the accompanying accoutrements could also be affixed to the newer conversion. The M1816 bayonet was the first American bayonet to include a uniformly ground flute and the first bayonet to employ the “T” mortise in the socket. The triangular blade on this particular item measures 16¼”.  ‘US’ is stamped onto the flat shank with a faint ‘V’ stamped underneath. Letter’s denoted under the U.S could indicate an inspector’s mark or production line symbol.  For example, ‘S’ is a common punch and could reflect the manufacturer mark of Springfield.  The ‘V’ indicated on this blade is most likely an inspector’s mark.  The socket measures 3”. The bayonet has a very dark brown patina. [mk] [ph:L]
