MODEL 1816 HARPERS FERRY MUSKET ALTERED TO PERCUSSION, DATED 1823

$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1146-156

This Model 1816 Harpers Ferry .69 caliber smoothbore was altered from flintlock to a “bolster type” percussion musket. This type of conversion was done from the mid-1850s through the beginning of the Civil War. By this method, the old breech was cut off and replaced with an entirely new breech (with integral bolster) that was screwed into the barrel.

The musket has a 42” round barrel secured with three barrel-bands that in turn are held in place with iron band springs. Not rifled even though a two-leaf rear sight was added and the ramrod has counter-sunk head for elongated balls. Smoothbore has some dirt and dust throughout. Front sight mounted on the upper barrel band. A small bayonet lug is also mounted on top of barrel at muzzle.

The lockplate is marked “HARPERS / FERRY / 1823” behind the rounded, high spur hammer. Forward of the hammer the “US” under a small eagle motif.  Old holes for flint-related parts have been filled.

Original “button head” ramrod remains in good condition with threaded end and counter-sunk head. Both sling swivels, one at the middle band and one in front of the trigger guard bow are present. Butt plate, trigger guard, side plate, barrel bands, and several screw heads are stamped with a small “1”.

Black walnut stock has good grain and color. Appears to have been varnished long ago. Minor scuffs and dings to the wood from age and use. The edges of the raised “flats” on either side of the breech remain strong. No cartouches are visible.

A great early Harpers Ferry conversion musket!  [jet] [ph:L]
