Item Code: 779-09

Here is an original, seldom-seen Frank Wesson single-shot breechloader in excellent condition, one of the best that we have handled. This 1st Type, twin-trigger, .44 caliber rimfire, Wesson rifle made circa 1859 to 1864, is one of the estimated 2,000 Type 1 units produced at Worcester, Massachusetts.

This tip-up F. Wesson rifle, though not a military purchase, is an extremely fine rifle specimen with serial #2769 stamped on the trigger guard extension. The weapon, often referred to as a carbine, measures 39” long overall and weighs 6 pounds. The octagonal rifled barrel is 24” long and retains almost 100% of its original factory bluing in excellent plus condition. The rounded iron receiver / frame and the forend are forged integrally. No wooden forend stock. Rifle retains its original vertical slotted link (guide) at the right rear of barrel as well as its German-silver, mounted-blade front sight. Top of barrel flat marked “FRANK WESSON WORCESTOR MASS. / PATENTED OCT 25, 1859 & NOV 11, 1862.” Bore is excellent. Original two-leaf rear sight.

Receiver frame wears a dark gray / brown patina and is void of any case. Barrel breech has a slight relief or recess at each side to accommodate the removal of the metallic rim cartridge. One receiver screw very slightly buggered. Rifle has its original sling swivel mount in the stock, but actual swivel is a replacement. Swivel mount on underside of barrel is missing. The small hole on the left side of frame is factory original and is meant to reposition the stock’s swivel hinge mount if required. The original untouched black walnut shoulder stock is fine with just light usage marks. Butt plate appears to have been chromed at one time and shows the numeral “7” visible on the tang.

An almost minty .44 caliber rimfire, this very fine Frank Wesson rifle is certain to enhance any collection.
