Longarm is an original M1816, musket made by Marine T. Wickham of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1813, Wickham was a government inspector of arms at a U.S. arsenal, and later was listed as a gunsmith in Maryland in the musket manufacturing business. This flintlock longarm is a .69 caliber, single shot muzzleloader that retains all its original parts in good condition.
This musket has a 42” long round barrel secured to the stock by three iron bands. The breech tang is undated and the left side of the breech is stamped “F P” and “US”. The cock (hammer), frizzen, brass pan, feather spring, and screws are in good condition. A large trigger guard secures the sling swivel while the middle barrel band supports the second swivel. Bore is dark and dirty. Iron butt plate is unmarked. Has a button-head ramrod with threaded end. Gunmetal has an overall dark brown, mottled color.
The iron lock is slightly rounded at the tail and measures about 6¾” long. Lockplate is undated and stamped “M.T. WICKHAM / PHILA” between the hammer and feather spring. Mechanics are stiff but strong.
Black walnut stock is dark and in overall good condition. Usual dings and scrapes. There is a some burn out in the wood behind the hammer and pan. A few letter stamps on the left flat appears like “V / CF”. Nice original tone and finish.
This musket is a nice M1816 Wickham flintlock musket typically used by militia in the early 19th century. [jet] [ph:L]
