This original Civil War long arm is complete and in very fine condition, "Springfield" Model 1863, Type 2, .58 caliber, percussion muzzleloader. The rifle-musket was a government arsenal product from Springfield Massachusetts. These muskets were produced for the U.S. Ordnance Department during the war years.

Barrel has a smooth and bright surface. No pitting to speak of at the breech. Deep clear 1864 date on the top facet of the breech and a deep clear "V/P [Eagle Head]" on the next facet. Bolster with a flat side features a clear attractive nicely detailed spread-winged eagle. Blued single leaf rear sight is mounted near the breech and combination blade sight and bayonet lug is mounted at the muzzle.

Case hardened lock and hammer wear a dark attractive patina. Lock markings with the "Eagle / U.S. / Springfield" in front of the hammer. The distinctive "S" hammer has beveled edges as it should be for this model. 1864 date is stamped behind the hammer. Mechanical action is strong and crisp.

This type musket was produced with the barrel band springs. Butt plate as a deep clear US. The butt plate, trigger guard, swivels, bands, and nose cap all perfectly match the smooth bright appearance of the barrel. The original steel straight -shanked ramrod is complete with threaded end.

The black walnut stock is in very fine condition with dark original color. It has two deep clear nice inspector's cartouches on the left flat. Stock is solid with no cracks or splits. It has the usual small dings and nicks with age and use. It has two deep clear nice inspector's cartouches on the left flat.
