Made in Philadelphia circa 1861-62. Total quantity made is 700, of which 600 were purchased by the Navy. Used to arm Marine guards aboard ships.

This is a .52 caliber breechloading rifle. The breech slides open by way of the trigger guard / loading lever.

The round barrel measures 32.75” long with blade site at the muzzle and adjustable rear site. A saber bayonet lug is mounted on underside of barrel near the muzzle. Bore is bright and clean with good rifling. Barrel has smooth dark brown patina.

Frame shows even wear with a few light scratches. Worn stamps, “PATENT / 1859” on left and “SHARPS / & / HANKINS / PHILADA” on right side of frame. Hammer with integral firing pin and sliding safety on left side. Breech tang has serial number 381 stamped on it. All mechanics are strong and crisp.

Two-piece walnut stock. Wood has original finish and nice dark patina with random small dings and dents. Brass butt plate. Sling swivels on middle barrel band and on underside of butt stock.
