A very good condition GAR encampment badge dated 1909. While the National GAR encampment took place in Salt Lake City, UT on August of 1909, at the state level various posts would host their own encampments using the national encampment model. This particular badge was worn during the GAR’s Pennsylvania department encampment held in Gettysburg on June 9 and 10, 1909. The top bar has a clasp and reads “JUNE 1909” with the GAR seal in the center. The bottom bar reads “REPRESENTATIVE.” The hanging medallion has an image of the department commander, Patrick DeLacy, encircled with the writing “43rd ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT DEPT OF PA G.A.R.” On the reverse is an engraving of Meade’s Headquarters.
Lieutenant Patrick DeLacy was from Luzerne County, PA and entered into service with the Pennsylvania 143rd infantry on August 26, 1862. He mustered out in 1865 and would later be awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Wilderness Campaign.
This a good addition to any collector who wants to preserve the legacy of past Union service members via the GAR. [MK]
