Recovered from Marsh Creek area near the Covered Bridge on Scott Road. Confederate-modified Union box, either found or captured. This early-war U.S. box has had its outer flap removed, as was customary among Confederates, and was modified to accommodate a buckled strap for belt attachment, an accompanying remnant of which is included. This dusty brown box is shrunken and somewhat fragile, with detached stitching on its left side, while its leather remains somewhat supple. The accompanying belt fragment is stiff and brittle retains its upper buckle and lower attachment hole. Otherwise VG, and entirely recognizable.
Superb battlefield “pick-up” relic. Its undeniable Confederate characteristics, combined with its recovery on the Confederate side of the field, make for a solid Gettysburg collectible. [sr] [ph:L]
