Gettysburg battlefield stereoview, from the studio of William Tipton. This view depicts the “Valley of Death” area between Devil’s Den and Little Round Top and is captioned “No. 840 Looking across the swale from Devil’s Den to Little Round Top.” At the foreground are several white pekin ducks, likely foraging near Plum Run.

The right side image is brighter and more detailed than the left side image, which exhibits some fading. The right side image show minor scuffs and staining at the top. Printing is clear and the cardstock is firm with crisp, rounded edges. The backside is unmarked, with some minor water staining along the edges. The card is slightly bowed. Tipton was a native of Gettysburg who started as a wartime apprentice photographer of Charles and Isaac Tyson. He was a prolific and famed producer of photographs from Civil War battlefields and his stereoviews were especially popular in the 1880s.  [JC] [ph:L]
