Offered here are three pieces made by Henry or Charles Speese (Speese & Son potters, Seminary Ridge) of Gettysburg, circa 1885. Created and sold as souvenirs to early Gettysburg battlefield visitors.
First is a red clay marble that measures 0.825” in diameter. No inscription; possibly just made as a “shooter” for a game of marbles. No imperfections.
Second is a molded miniature Civil War canteen which once had a small photo of Jennie Wade pasted to the front, now missing. Canteen measures approximately 1 ¼” in diameter. Inscriptions are pressed into the clay. On the front around the photo is “KILLED JULY 2, 1863 / JENNIE WADE” and on the reverse is “Clay from Gettysburg battlefield”.
The third item is a miniature jug that measures 0.82” tall. Inscriptions are pressed into the clay. Around the body is “GETTYSBURG JULY 1, 2, 3, 63”.
All three pieces presented in small Ryker case which is, in turn fitted into a 7” square frame.
Made from battlefield clay, these miniatures were described in advertisements as, "made from material taken from the most historical portions of the field, they are themselves relics”. [jet] [ph:L]
