A nicely matted and gilt framed copy of the program for the 75^th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, billed as the “Final Reunion of the Blue and Gray.” Attended by 1,359 Union veterans and 486 Confederate veterans, of whom 25 had been participants in the battle, the event included a speech by President Franklin Roosevelt and unveiling of the Eternal Light Peace Memorial. It was a vast undertaking with a large support network to supply transportation, food, quarters and attendants to the veterans, who average 94 years of age, and included a number of speeches and parades. The Peace Memorial had been planned for the 50^th Anniversary, but funding problems postponed it. When finally dedicated in 1938, 250,000 attended the ceremonies.

The program has two horizontal folds and some light foxing, but shows very well and is appropriately matted in blue and gray.  The frame measures 10 3/4" x 14"; the visible portion of the program measures 6" x 9". The history of Civil War reunions is interesting not only from the point of view of the veterans involved, but in the changing ways the war was viewed and its place in popular history and our own vision of our past.  [sr] [ph:L]
