This brass nose cap was "eyeballed" in 1987 just off the Fairfield Road, Gettysburg by highly respected author Gregory A. Coco. The location was in a then recently plowed field about 100 yards from the Gettysburg YWCA. It was acquired by the consignor in 2007 when he purchased the majority of the Coco collection just prior to his death.

The item of cast brass measures approximately 1-inch by 1-inch. It has a wonderful "dug" patina with some minor "high spots" from over 35 years of handling. This is not a nose cap for a Model US 1855 rifle nor an 1858 British Enfield (see images attached). This is made manifest by the narrow groove cast into it that facilitates the unique narrow shafted ramrods produced by Richmond starting in 1862. Also, a screw was used for attachment to the stock on a Richmond rather than a rivet as in the US Model 1855 weapon. Please see photos for the marked differences in the 1858 Enfield, the 1855 rifle-musket and the classic Richmond Armory nose caps. A small but significant Confederate relic.    [pe][ph:L]
