Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 870-88

Manufactured: Philadelphia  Maker: Horstmann  Year: not dated  Model: 1840 NCO  Size: 31.5 inches

Early wide blade NCO sword by Horstmann of Philadelphia.  Horstmann NCO swords are distinct as they have a turned down counter guard.  The M1840 NCO sword was the Marine Corps regulation until the change in 1859 which called for Marine Corp NCO's to use a sword patterned after the 1850 Foot Officer Sword.  Possible based on this configuration this is an early Marine NCO from 1840-1850. Throat with frog attachment and drag are pinned. Pommel and knuckle bow are marked with an “8”. Counter guard is engraved in beautiful period script “U.S.M.C” and the name “John J. Simon”. No confirmation of this person’s identity has been made; further research certainly a possibility. Blade has a few nicks which can be seen in the photographs above.
