High grade foot officer’s sword from Horstmann. Brass guard is a higher cast grade with inside of guard cast with panoply of arms. Knuckle bow and pommel cap has additional casting and chasing and retains a majority of its original gilt. Silver rolled grip is chased with foliate and has the name “Capt. John Craig USA” etched on the obverse grip inside of a shield. Blade is Horstmann’s highest grade with 2 tone gold wash, frost and demascus. Obverse etch is Kings head stamp / W. H. Hortsmann & Sons / stand of arms / spread winged eagle surrounded by rays / stand of arms”. Reverse etch is foliate - stand of arms - eagle / US surrounded by rays / stand of arms. Scabbard is sharkskin and is in great condition. Brass mounts and drag has deep patina with traces of gilt. Silver medallion on top mount is an eagle, middle mount and drag medallion are Lady Columbia or Lady Liberty. Reverse of top mount has the presentation: “Presented by the / Employees of the Schuylkill Arsenal / To Capt. John Craig / MSK / March 1868”.
John Craig, born in Pennsylvania, enlisted as a Captain and was commissioned into the US Quartermaster’s Department, Volunteers, on 5/30/63, serving through 5/17/65. On 1/1/65 he was made an M.S.K. (Military Store Keepers) in the Quartermaster’s Dept., US Regular Army. Promoted to Captain, M.S.K. 7/28/66. Brevetted Major of Volunteers 3/13/65 for faithful and meritorious service. Honorably discharged on 12/31/70 at his request. [ld]
