Cast brass cross guard, grip, and pommel; plated. Each end of the cross guard features an eagle head with coiled snake clutched in its beak. The Athenian helmet seal is in the center. At some time after 1922, this seal was adopted into the Academy's coat of arms, instead of the letters "MA". Grip is brass impressed to resemble wire wrap. The grip has a slight wobble to it.
Blade is double edged and remains polished bright. Etching remains crisp with “U.S.M.A” and the maker’s name, “The M.C. Lilley & Co. Columbus, O” on one side and the cadet’s name on the other side. At the junction with the guard, “Germany” is stamped into the blade. No edge nicks.
Chromed scabbard features a brass throat, mount, and drag. No dings or dents. Beautiful bright finish overall.
Dean Ambrose Herman, Sr., was born in Kansas on March 13, 1906. He was in the U.S.M.A. class of 1931 and had a 30-year career in the Army. During WW2 he commanded the 261st Field Artillery Battalion as it advanced from the Elbe River to the Rhine. During his service he was awarded the silver star, bronze star, army commendation ribbon, national defense medal, and Chinese nationalist order of yun hui medal. After retiring from the army, he worked as an aerospace engineer. He died on April 26, 1996 and is buried at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
A very nice USMA Cadet sword from a WW2 veteran. [jet]
