This volume is a first edition which was written by Stephen R. Pinckney and published in 1863. Pinckney was the Major of the 11th Regiment of the New York National Guard.

Book has a tan colored cloth cover with an embossed border design on the front and back covers, as well as gold embossed lettering on the spine that reads, “NATIONAL GUARD MANUAL”. The cloth cover is worn on the corners and some surface dirt is present. Pages have yellowed with age but binding is tight and none are loose or missing. Book measures 7 ¼” x 4 ¾” x ¾”. Text contains 281 pages.

Inside on the third page is hand inscribed, “PRESENTED TO W.W. UPSON BY GEO. B. CURTIS, HANOVER, APRIL 28, 1864”. William Upson enlisted on September 2, 1864 in Huron, New York as a Private into Co. “F”, 75th New York Infantry. He was mustered out on June 28, 1865. Upson died in 1907 and is buried in Huron Evergreen Cemetery in Huron, NY.

George Curtis enlisted on September 28, 1861 at Huron, New York as a 1st Sergeant and was later mustered into Co. “H”, 75th New York Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant as well as Captain. He was discharged on August 9, 1863. Curtis died in 1906 and is buried in Glenside Cemetery in Wolcott, NY.

Stamped on the inside of the back cover in an oval is, “RESPECTS OF / GEO. B. CURTIS / ASSEMBLY / DOORKEEPER”. Internet research revealed that Curtis was appointed a Doorkeeper of the New York State Assembly in January, 1864.

This manual contains chapters on the school of the soldier, bayonet exercise, school of the company, skirmish drill, manual for light artillery, musket drill and camp instruction. There are various illustrations throughout, as well as a dictionary in the back.
