These large color lithographs were marketed to veterans as suitable mementos and testimonials of their service to the county and are the descendants of the illustrated company rosters sold by peddlers in the wartime camps of the army. These show up in number of forms, but the general format is the same: an American eagle with a US shield appears prominently and several generic battle scenes are shown in vignettes. In this case, the publisher has included service-specific scenes involving a sailor, cavalryman, artilleryman, and infantryman, to cover most of his potential market. The individual’s name and unit are then filled in by hand, with some elements emphasized in dark ink, along with a summary of his service record and short history of the unit. In this case the veteran was James Sheets, who mustered into the 208th PA as a private in Co. A on 8/30/64, and served until muster out at Alexandria, Va., on 6/1/65. The regiment served briefly in the 18th Corps, Army of the James, and then in the 9th Corps Army of the Potomac. Despite their short term of service, they lost 2 officers and 19 men killed or mortally wounded, principally in the defense of Fort Stedman on March 25 and the final assault on Petersburg on April 2, 1865. The summary of his record as it appears on the memorial likely follows that in the records of his G.A.R. Post, and refers to him as Comrade Sheets. At the bottom of the memorial a presentation has been filled out, indicating Sheets gave it as a present to his wife and daughter in 1901.

The memorial is still in its original frame and is colorful and in good condition.  It is ready to hang either as part of a collection related to the 208th Pennsylvania, to Civil War veterans’ memorabilia, or even as part of a Sheets family archive.  [sr]
