$125.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-5605

Single volume of “HARDEE’S RIFLE AND LIGHT INFANTRY TACTICS” in used condition. The spine has some fine cracking and the covers are worn but the volume is holding together. All the fold-out plates appear to have been torn. Interior has some pencil marks that appear to be from a child practicing hand writing.

On the inside front cover in period pencil is “Hiram E. Fogg of Co. E 6th Reg Maine Vols.” in three lines while the page opposite has a bold ink name: “J. Snowman”. Both inscriptions are among other pencil marks and calculations. Both men served in the 6th Maine Infantry.

Hiram E. Fogg was 20 years old from Bucksport, Maine. He enlisted on July 15, 1861 as a private and was placed in Company E. He was promoted to corporal sometime in 1862. He became ill and was discharged for disability on December 19, 1862.

Joseph Snowman was 48 years old and also from Bucksport. He enlisted and was commissioned Captain of Company E on July 15, 1861. He resigned his commission on January 16, 1862.

Sixth Maine Infantry -- This regiment was composed principally of the hardy lumbermen of the Penobscot valley and the eastern portion of the state, who were quick to respond to the first call to arms.  On July 15, 1861, the regiment was mustered into the service of the United States and on the 17th left for Washington, DC. The regiment arrived in Washington on the 19th and was stationed at Chain Bridge on the Potomac, where it remained until September 3.  Through the fall and winter of 1861-62 it occupied Fort Griffin as part of the defenses of Washington.

The regiment eventually became part of the 6th Corps in the Army of the Potomac and fought in all the associated battles, although the men named within this book did not remain in service long.  [jet]  [ph:L]
