This is a popular pattern of folding cup housed in a two-piece varnished tin case convenient for travelers, campers, and soldiers, though rather more appropriate to a camp than field service. In this case a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard in the 1880s has memorialized his service by scratching on the top and bottom of the case his initials, “NGP” for “National Guard of Pennsylvania,” and the locations and date of his summer drills from 1880 to 1886 at locations such at Camp Washington, Camp McCall, Camp Reno, and, best of all, Camp Gettysburg in 1884.
The open ground of the battlefield provided a convenient place for military encampments and maneuvers over the years, which are an interesting part of the park’s history under the administration of the War Department and also say something about how the public viewed the battlefield as a memorial over time.
