Post-war period piece, framed in brown wood w/interior gilt trim, 20.75” x 26.75, w/wood backing. Colored card shield memorial, blue & red, topped w/flag & American eagle. Frame does not contain glass or plexiglass.

Shield lists 6th Connecticut battle honors:  Hilton Head [S.C.], Ft. Pulaski, Pocotaglio, James Island, Secessionville, Morris island, Siege of Ft. Wagner; as well as Private Loomis’s regimental activities: “Co. F artificer-- Detailed in the Quartermaster’s Dept—Mustered Sept. 7, 1861/Transferred V.R.C.—Discharged Dec. 26th ’63 in consequence of sickness contracted in the service.” Bottom panel inscribed (in gilt) “Clark M. Loomis.”

Organized in September 1861, the 6th Connecticut served early in the Carolinas, later to join in 1864 James River operations, engaged at Drewry’s Bluff, partaking in operations against Wilmington in January 1865, while serving in the trenches before Richmond. During service the unit lost 110 men killed and mortally wounded and 83 by disease for a total of 193.

Born in 1829 in Oswego County, NY, Loomis died in New Haven, CT in 1890 and is buried there in Evergreen Cemetery.

Wooden frame exhibits one minor nick at the left margin and light wear at the extremities. Inner card memorial beige backdrop slightly faded. Colored shield stands out beautifully, exuding considerable character. There is a tear measuring approx. 5" in length, running along the bottom of edge of eagle's right wing, with two smaller tears each extending upwards from the larger tear (both approx 1 1/4" in length). There is also some minor damage to the oval at the center of the large riband at the bottom.  Highly attractive. Solid 6th Connecticut collectible.   [jp] [ph:L]

Will likely require an extra shipping charge.
