William Frederick Newell was born in Massachusetts in 1844. He was an 18 year old farmer living in Dalton when he enlisted as a Private in Company K, 34th Massachusetts Infantry on July 31, 1862.

The 34th began its service in the defenses of Washington. In July of 1863 it became part of the Department of West Virginia and saw its first heavy action in the battle of New Market on May, 15, 1864. Afterward, the regiment was engaged in some smaller actions before being heavily engaged again at Piedmont on June 5, 1864. It was during this latter battle that Private Newell was wounded to an undetermined degree.

The 34th also saw action at Lynchburg, Berryville, Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, Cedar Creek and Petersburg. Private Newell was mustered out at Richmond, Virginia on June 16, 1865.

After the war he returned home and later became a member of Lyon Post #41 of the GAR in Westfield, Massachusetts. He died on March 13, 1911.

Frederick William Newell served in Company A, 6th Massachusetts during the Spanish-American War and made it to Puerto Rico before the war ended.  [ad] [PH:L]
