Leather bound pocket New Testament printed in England in 1861. Covers are in nice condition with only minor edge wear. Front has a white metal escutcheon and catch to hold the volume closed. Spine is marked “TESTAMENT” in slightly worn gold.
Item meas. approx. 2.75 x 4.00 inches. Binding is excellent and the pages have toned some with age and the bottom edges of the pages have a dark stain.
Inside the front cover is a period pencil inscription that reads “LAVANT DELRON PALMER / PARENTS RESIDE AT LIGONIER, NOBLE CO. / INDIANA / ADRESS C.W. PALMER.”
The first blank page has a faint penciled ID that looks to be “TOM PIERCE” and below that in a different hand is “PETERS” and “AUG 15th IN THE FREEDOMS.”
The next two pages are a map of Israel and a map of Jerusalem. The next page is blank and has a period pencil inscription that reads “FOUND THIS BOOK IN A REBEL KNAPSACK REB WAS SHOT THROUGH THE HEAD PLUM CENTER.”
Inside the back cover is another inscription that reads “LAVANT D. PALMER / CO. B 2ND MICH / VETERAN VOL INF/ 2ND BRIG 3RD DIV. / 9TH A. CORPS / ?? BOOK.”
Levant (also spelled LAVANT) D. Palmer was born in 1844 in Orangeville, New York. He was living in Pittsford, Michigan when he enlisted as a private in Company B, 2nd Michigan Infantry on May 25, 1861. He reenlisted on December 31, 1863 and was wounded to an undetermined degree at Petersburg on June 15, 1864. He was promoted 1st sergeant on April 15, 1865 and commissioned 2nd lieutenant July 22, 1865. He was mustered out on July 28, 1865.
After the war Palmer lived in Onstead, Michigan where he died in 1896. He is buried there in Maple Shade Cemetery. [ad][ph:L]
