CDV shows Christopher C. Holmes posed standing with one hand resting on the back of a chair. He wears a dark civilian suit, white shirt and dark bowtie.

Contrast is good, clarity is a bit grainy. Paper and mount are good.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for BLACK…BOSTON. At top is FOR LT. COL. GRISWOLD” in pencil.

Christopher C. Holmes was born in Kingston, Massachusetts on September 14, 1817. He was 44 years old when he was commissioned lieutenant colonel of the Boston Cadets on August 26, 1858. The Cadets were mustered into Federal service on May 26, 1862. They garrisoned Fort Warren in Boston Harbor and were mustered out on July 2, 1862. Holmes remained with the militia until January of 1868.

After the war Holmes practiced medicine in Boston.

Holmes died on July 16, 1882 and is buried in Milton Cemetery in Milton, Massachusetts.    [ad]
