Vignette image of a young Union soldier wearing a dark frock coat and light military vest.

Clarity and contrast are good. Mount and paper are also in nice shape with just one small spot of foxing near the subject’s shoulder.

Reverse has no photographer’s mark. Top has modern pencil ID of “MICHAEL MALONEY.” There is also a small label with a collector’s code.

With the image is a modern printed label with the soldier’s name and regiment.

Michael Maloney was born in Limerick, Ireland. He was 23 years old when he enlisted as a private in Company B, 115th New York on July 30, 1862. He was captured with his regiment at Harper’s Ferry on September 15, 1862 and paroled the next day. Sent to Chicago until exchanged the regiment eventually returned south and saw action at Olustee, Chester Station, Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. Maloney was captured during the battle of the Crater but later escaped and returned to the regiment on  April 22, 1865. He was mustered out at Raleigh, North Carolina on June 17, 1865.  [ad]
