Image is a three-quarter standing view of Jeremiah C. Groff. He is posed with his left hand resting on the top of a low table. He wears a long commercial sack coat with a dark shirt with white collar and light trousers. A watch chain is visible running from his shirt to the watch pocket on his trousers.

Contrast and clarity are excellent. Paper and mount have only light surface dirt on the edge. Bottom center of mount has period ink inscription “YOURS TRULY J. C. GROFF.”

Reverse is blank.

Jeremiah C. Groff was born December 21, 1838 and enlisted as a private in Co. D, 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry on September 1, 1861. He was soon transferred to the Quartermaster’s Department and served in that capacity until January 1864, having served with the regiment through the Shiloh, Corinth, and Vicksburg Campaigns. He was selected to become quartermaster sergeant of the 110th United States Colored Troops and joined that regiment January 5, 1864, serving until his mustering out on February 6, 1866. He returned to Ohio following the war and died March 7, 1883, being buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Upper Sandusky, Wyandot Co., Ohio.

The 81st Ohio was organized in August of 1861 and served in the Department of Tennessee. The regiment saw action at Shiloh, Corinth, Resaca, Rome, Dallas, Atlanta and Bentonville.

During their service the regiment lost 4 officers and 218 killed, died of wounds and disease. Numerous others were wounded but recovered. [ad]
