Image shows Gilbert standing with hand on side table. He wears what appears to be military sack coat, non-regulation shirt and trousers.

Image has good clarity and contrast with some light soiling. Mount and paper are in nice condition. Bottom of mount has a period ink inscription “Thomas F Gilbert”.  Reverse is blank with some collector information in pencil.

Thomas Gilbert enlisted on February 25, 1864 as a Private in company "F" 88th PA Infantry. There is no other information.

The 88th Pennsylvania was organized in September of 1861. They served in the Army of the Potomac from October, 1861 to March, 1862 when they were shifted to the defenses of Washington and the Department of the Rappahannock. In June of 1862 they joined the 3rd Corps in the Army of the Potomac and in September of that same year they were shifted to the 1st Corps where they remained until consolidation with the 5th Corps in early 1864.

The 88th saw action in 42 engagements including 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg and Five Forks. The regiment suffered 181 deaths and many others wounded.  [jet] [ph:L]
