Large brass and steel veterinary instrument. A steel spring is attached to the bottom of the brass body. A blade is inserted into slot at the other end and secured with locking bar. Blade is cocked by squeezing the spring until a latch in the body engages the end. A thumb release lets it go.

A compartment in top of the brass handle is to hold spare blades; empty.

Very distinctly marked “G. KERN / PHILAD’A” in the brass handle on both sides. Horatio G. Kern was in the surgical instrument business in Philadelphia from 1837 to 1893.  The business was located at several addresses in Philadelphia over the years; at 293 High Street in the 1850s. And he was a contract supplier of instruments to the Union Army during the Civil War.  During the 1860's his location was at 25 N. 6th in Philadelphia, Pa.

Very good condition. Measures approximately 4 1/2" x 3 1/2".  [jet] [ph:L]
