CIVIL WAR ERA NAVAL FID

$75.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1156-59

Typically, naval fids of the 18th and 19th century were carved out of wood or bone and used for knotting, splicing rope, and canvas repair.  In a sailor’s down time they may carve designs into the handles.  The fid pictured here is conical shape and has a tapered, sharp end.  It is made of bone and measures 7” in length.  Retains good coloring for age, ivory and a few dark spots, most likely due to natural coloration of aged bone.  [mc] [ph:L]
