NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE MILITIA PLATE & POSTWAR BELT

$400.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-604

This rare plate is in very good condition. The plate is oval like the Pattern 1839 “US” but at the center of this plate are the letters “NHSM.” The face has a very light patina on its surface with scattered minor spots of discoloration. There are no major dings or dents to the face or the edge.

The reverse has 100% of the lead fill, both arrow hooks and the tongue.

Plate is attached to a postwar bridle leather belt. Leather has some light surface wear but is in otherwise nice supple condition. For some reason there is a rectangular cut in the leather toward the back of the belt. This cut meas. approx. 1.00 inch in length x 0.25 inch wide and was very carefully done. Its purpose is not known.

These New Hampshire plates used to be considered just post-war 1866-1875 however there is now some thought that they may have been produced for state forces in 1862.  [ad] [ph:L]
