This is an original wreath with belt loop from an interlocking “two-piece CS” belt buckle. These are usually from saber belts and worn by officers and mounted enlisted men. The shows very typical signs of hasty production with the usual rough finish from sand casting and loss of detail to the wreath as second and third generation plates might be used to make the mold impression for the next round to be poured. For the makers, time could be better spent than in fine detailing and supplying the army with functional equipment was paramount.
This has no bends or repairs, and is a good example of a widely worn Confederate buckle. [SR][PH:L]
