The interlocking two-piece CS is usually from a sword belt. Distinguishing between officers’ and enlistedmen’s versions can be tricky. This one is very plain, but is well finished, with a nicely defined CS and the tell-tale porous looking surface from sand casting smoothed out on the face of the plate and belt loop by careful filing. We note a slight notch in the edge at the 8 o’clock position, likely a bit of hand-fitting to the wreath portion of the belt. We would incline to it being an officer’s plate, but there is certainly room for debate. In any case, it is a very nice example, completely original with no damage or repairs, and with a very pleasing patina. It would make a great addition to a Confederate collection. [SR][PH:L]
