CONFEDERATE GUTTER-BACK ENLISTED FRAME BUCKLE

$550.00 SOLD

Item Code: 1126-22

This is a classic Confederate enlisted man’s belt buckle. The fixed-tongue frame buckle was simple to make, widely produced, and saw service in every theatre of the war. In this case the outer frame was cast hollow (hence “gutter back,”) which saved on metal, made a lighter frame, and added strength. The two fixed tongues are flat, cast in one piece with the frame, and lie on the same plane with it on the face, which was file finished. The reverse shows the rough sand-casting. The face has a nice even olive green patina with a few scattered rubs. The reverse has the same green along the raised edges and a mix of white, brown, and gray in the channel. There are no bends, breaks, or repairs.

This is nice example of a quintessential CS belt buckle that displays very well and would be good addition to a collection of Civil War plates and buckles. [sr] [ph:L]
