This is an original Virginia style two-piece CS plate, complete with tongue and wreath, mounted on a reproduction belt in the 1960s or 1970s. The plate is in excellent condition with typical rough sand casting to the wreath, but nicely delineated inner border and raised CS on the tongue with exaggerated serifs at the upper ends of the “C” and both ends of the “S.” This is a match for Plate 0006 in Mullinax 1991, p. 10.

This was mounted on a brown leather sword belt showing the correct pointed stitching holding the wreath portion of the plate. The tongue portion is secured simply by looping the other end of the belt through its sidebar slot and adjusting it by friction with two sliding keepers. The maker secured a forward saber sling by suspending it from the lower of two brass loops held by a chape sewn on the belt and stitched in place the rear sling at its upper end in the wearer’s left rear. One button/stud is present. The other is missing and was replaced by a hollow brass disk.

We don’t know why an original plate was so mounted. It was perhaps for display to show how the plate would have looked in the field, but some stains, rubs and stress marks on the leather suggest this was actually worn by a reenactor. This would be a historically and, today, financially risky proposition but at the time it may have represented an ancestor’s plate or personal find by the wearer. In any case, it has survived in good condition and we have left it as it came to us. [sr] [ph:m]
