MODEL 1858 SMOOTHSIDE NEW YORK DEPOT CANTEEN WITH COVER, STRAP, AND STOPPER

$395.00 ON HOLD

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 490-2623

The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. It is covered in brown wool. The cover is complete and in good condition. Looks to have been stored in a damp place as there are some rusty stains overall. The stitched seam is unbroken.

The three sling loops and spout are all present. Stopper with ring and chain. The spout has no maker’s mark but has initials “E. L.” carved in twice. This is a New York Depot canteen and it still has an iron chain connecting the stopper to one of the side strap brackets. The chain is complete.

An original cotton shoulder strap remains on the canteen.  It remains strong and clean with just a few scattered rust spots.

This is a terrific example of a Civil War smooth-side canteen with soldier’s initials on spout.  [jet] [ph:L]
