PITTMAN CONTRACTOR MARKED CAVALRY CARBINE CARTRIDGE BOX

$200.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 480-212

This is a nice Civil War cavalry carbine box marked “Made by J. Pittman N-Y” on the lower edge of the inner flap. This is the standardized form of Civil War carbine box that could carry a variety of ammunition depending on the configuration of the wood block inside, but usually amounting to twenty rounds. This is fitted with loops on the reverse for carrying on the saber belt, though they were occasionally placed on the carbine sling, and is also provided with a retaining strap and buckles for use on shoulder sling, which is seldom, if ever, seen. The interior flap is in place, as is the implement pouch with flap and tab. No block is present on the inside, but this does not show from the exterior. All loops, buckles and tabs are present. The finish is good, though showing crackling and wear from use, which is also indicated by some abrasion to the belt loops, indicating it was actually issued and worn by a trooper. Pittman had been in the military goods business since 1845 at least and had business connections with Dingee and perhaps others. He had Civil War contracts for thousands of infantry, artillery and cavalry accouterments and gear. This has not been treated with any preservatives or polish and would display well with a carbine  [sr] [ph:L]
