Box is a Pattern 1857 for carrying .58 elongated ball cartridges.

The outer flap shows light surface scuffing and some crazing from use in the lower corners. There is also the outline of a removed plate with the two corresponding slits in the leather. Scratched between the slits is “U.S.A.” over “G. F. KARN” over “WILLSBORO” over “N.Y.” Latch tab is held to the underside of the outer flap by single line stitching only. Tab is worn and split. Beneath stitching is scratched “U.S.”

Inner flap has both ears and surface crackling throughout with minor surface finish loss. Implement pocket is complete but shows the same kind of crackling as the inner flap. Both tins are present but both are missing their dividers and one is missing part of the front edge.

The body of the box is good. The exterior of one of the side panels is marked “C.S. STORMS” over “MAKER N.Y.”

Bottom of the box has both roller buckles and brass finial.

Reverse shows a very good leather surface with both the belt and sling loops.

The name scratched on the box could not be found in any database of Civil War soldiers. Most likely the inscription was done by a later owner. Perhaps a family member.  [ad] [ph:L]
