PATTERN 1861 CARTIDGE BOX WITH SLING AND BOTH PLATES

$695.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2022-1015

Box is for carrying the .69 round ball cartridge.

Outer flap is in excellent condition. The leather surface is very smooth and mostly clean. The remains of the broken latch tab are held to the flap by a single line of stitching. The box has an oval “US” plate attached with small pieces of blue wire. Despite the face of the plate being smooth and clean with a good “US” stamping, the reverse has rusted loops and an oxidation on the lead surface that leads one to suspect it is a cleaned up dug plate. That said, the plate is free of any major dings, dents or scratches and does have a dark patina on the face.

Inner flap has both ears and the leather surface is moderately crazed. No tins are present inside the box. Implement pocket is complete and somewhat dry with light crazing throughout.

Bottom of the box has both roller buckles and a round brass finial. The bottom leather panel of the box is bent inward due to pressure on the box over the years and the lack of tins to keep it ridged. The side panels of the box and the back also have some dryness but no open seams

Reverse has both the sling and belt loops with the belt loops being riveted and sewn. Loops show heavy crazing and are very dry but holding.

Sling is still attached and matches the leather of the box in that it is mostly dry but holding together well. It does show some light wear in areas as well as crazing. The eagle breast plate is present and held to sling by a leather strip that looks to be the original. The face of the plate has a nice mellow patina. Reverse is clean with solid loops.  [AD] [ph:L]
