Offered here is an original Spanish-American War Era US Army Pattern 1896 leather cartridge pouch for .38 caliber revolver ammunition.  The box has the oval and “US” embossed on the outer flap and is marked on the back “ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL” with inspector initials. Measures 3 3/4" wide, 1 1/2" tall and 1 1/2" deep.

This is an early black bridle leather undated box.  The leather remains soft and supple.  No cracking or crazing. This box is fitted with a drilled wooden block used to store 12 rounds of .38 caliber ammunition. From 1896 until 1902 the boxes were black, not russet brown, and were undated. Two narrow belt loops sewn to the back. Brass finial attached to the bottom.  [jet] [ph:L]
