This early mourning ribbon signifies the death of the Marquis de Lafayette, who commanded American troops during the American Revolution. It is made of delicate white silk The ribbon is imprinted with the image of four flags: two French flags and two American, signifying their alliance during the Revolution. A Roman style urn, which reads “LAFAYETTE,” rests on a pedestal placed between the flags. His remains resting under the shade of a tree. An eagle overhead carries a banner that reads: “OUR NATION MOURNS A HERO GONE.” A framed image of the Marquis de Lafayette is placed front and center next to an hourglass.

The bottom of the ribbon reads “GEN’L GILBERT MOTTIER LAFAYETTE / BORN AT AUVERGNE SEPT. 6th 1757. DIED MAY 20th 1834 / AGED 76 YEARS 8 MONTHS & 14 DAYS / FUNERAL OBSEQUIES PERFORMED TO HIS MEMORY / JUNE 26th 1834 / NEW YORK.

Only the ribbon is present; The bar where the attachment pin would have been affixed is missing. Any trim which would have existed on the bottom of the ribbon is missing as well. Both the left and right edges are unfinished; the printed words are cut off on both sides. The “G” in general, the “B” in born, the “4” in 1834, the “F” in funeral, and the “Y” in memory are all obscured or are altogether missing. Both top and bottom edges are frayed with the bottom edge showing some loss.  [cls]
