CIVIL WAR PERIOD MEN’S CIVILIAN COTTON CORDUROY COAT

$300.00 SOLD

Item Code: 2022-1018

This coat is a nice example of Civil War period menswear. A nice lightweight corduroy, this white jacket is unlined and would be a dapper addition to a civil war gent’s outfit. The coat itself is approximately 35 inches in length and is 15.5 inches across the chest. Three self-covered buttons adorn the front. Two small self-covered buttons adorn the back just above the coattails. One small cuff button adorns each sleeve. Given the rounding of the sleeve, this coat fits the style of the Civil War period. One breast pocket opening on the diagonal adorns the front along with a notched lapel.

This coat is in need of some serious cleaning and would likely hold up to a good scrubbing. However, a previous owner scrawled their initials onto the inside of the coat just under the waist seam. “J.A.G” or “J.A.Y.” is present in period ink. If cleaned, this inscription would be lost. The jacket is quite dirty and there are water spots and moth nips throughout. However, the moth nips are present only on both the left and right sides near the waist. All seams appear to be intact except for the top portion of the collar. There are small tears to the fabric toward the cuff of each sleeve; these small breaks in the fabric have been stabilized by a modern collector or seamstress in order to prevent further deterioration. The same is true of the collar. The back portion of the collar has split apart and has been whipstitched together by a modern collector to preserve them.

This coat, although somewhat dirty, is a great example of Civil War menswear and would make a nice addition to anyone interested in the civilian perspective of the Civil War.  [cls] [ph:L]
