This photograph is a waist-up view of James Henry Denny. He is wearing a dark colored civilian frock coat, vest, white shirt and cravat. Image is clear with good contrast.
Top and bottom of mount has handwritten inscriptions in period ink. Top reads, “M.D. ASST. SURG. 2ND MS. HEAV. ART. PRISONER ONCE”. Bottom of mount reads, “JAMES HENRY DENNY, STATUS IN WESTBORO MASS NOV 2ND 1888”.
James Henry Denny was a resident of Boston, MA where he worked as a surgeon. He enlisted at the age of 25 on November 9, 1863 as an Assistant Surgeon. On December 28, 1863 he was commissioned into Co. “A”, Field & Staff 2nd MA Heavy Artillery. He is listed as a POW on April 20, 1864 in Plymouth, NC and was released on October 6. He was mustered out on September 3, 1865 at Wilmington, NC. After the war, Denny lived in Boston. He died on October 16, 1910 in Vienna, Austria.
