Cabinet card measures 4 ¼” X 6 ½”and is of heavy ivory stock. Bottom of mount has photographer’s imprint which reads, “HEBBEL, 321 N. GAY ST. BALTO, MD”. No markings on reverse.
Image is a full sitting view of Reiser wearing a dark colored frock coat, vest, white shirt, cravat and trousers with a stripe down the side. This appears to be a G.A.R. band uniform. Pinned to his coat are II Corps and G.A.R. badges.
Contrast is very good and image is clear. Edges have light wear and surface dirt.
George W. Reiser was listed as a 19 year old resident of Baltimore, Maryland and confectioner when he enlisted on May 4, 1861 as a musician. On May 7, 1861 he was mustered into Co. “E”, 6th Massachusetts Infantry. The 6th MA was the first unit to offer its services when Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to invade the South after Ft. Sumter was fired upon, and they were attacked by the citizens of Baltimore as they passed through on the way to Washington, D.C., known as “The Baltimore Riot”. He mustered out of the 6th on August 2, 1861 at Boston, MA. On September 11, 1861 he mustered into 20th MA Infantry Band. He mustered out on August 8, 1862. [sm]
